Forest City Gallery's artist residency program is currently on pause.

Previously, FCG's annual artist residency invited London-based and regional artists, curators, writers, and/or collectives for a 6-7 week long research & production residency in London, ON. Residency participants did not need to finish a project in the allotted time; instead they were asked to present the production/research completed during an artist talk at the conclusion of the residency.

 

FCG collaborated with H.B. Beal Secondary School to allow artists, writers, and curators to produce, educate, discuss, and collaborate with the next generation of artist leaders in London, ON while providing studio space for the duration of the residency by partnering with TAP Centre for Creativity.

Support:

• Two months of free studio space from the TAP Centre for Creativity.

• Chosen participants were awarded a stipend of $1000 (CAN).

• Accommodation compensation of $1000 (CAN) was given to out-of-London artists.

• Monthly City Bus Pass provided.

• Scheduled access to printmaking equipment, ceramic equipment, woodshop, mechanical shop all with a range of basic hand tools and resources.

• Artists participated in public programming in the form of an artist talk or workshop, open studio tours, and other discussed/proposed outreach initiatives.

Costs: Artists were responsible for covering costs associated with purchase of materials, shipment of artwork/supplies, travel costs, and living + subsistence expenses.

 

Location: London, Ontario, Canada (The traditional territory of the Anishinaabek, Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendat, Attawandaron and Lenape Indigenous peoples).

 

Expectations: Selected participants worked weekly at H.B Beal High School, along with studio time at TAP Centre for Creativity. They also participated in a final end-of-residency presentation where each participant presented their production/research to the London community. Selected residency participants discussed their respective practice with students and interested adolescents in order to contextualize, educate, and inform about the various issues and themes present. This took place through workshops, art talks, critiques, studio visits, and/or other activities during the duration of the residency.

 

Duration: 6-7 weeks, Oct - Nov 

 

Eligibility: This studio residency program was open to London/surrounding region (Ontario) artists working in a range of disciplines including but not limited to the visual arts, music, composition, new media, interdisciplinary arts, curatorial, and writing. Artists from all levels in their career who exhibit a strong professional work ethic and a collaborative attitude were invited to apply.

Bealart provides critical, contemporary art-making experiences, culminating in a portfolio of finished and experimental works that will distinguish our students from others and help them to succeed in postsecondary environments. We endeavour to direct students toward self-motivated, concept-driven artworks that showcase the skills and techniques learned using our unique facilities. Students are encouraged to be accountable for their work, the processes of its creation, as well as its meaning, through critique, self-reflective practice, and peer-to-peer interactions. Bealart works closely with the community to showcase the talents of the students and foster positive relationships outside of the classroom while promoting the visual arts and a sense of responsibility to that community.

 

TAP Centre for Creativity

 

TAP is at the centre of creativity in London, supporting emerging and developing theatre, visual, and performing artists. Our doors are open for artists and the public to overlap, participate, and experience how creativity can transform and enrich us and our community.

 

Featuring a gallery, black-box theatre, multi-use workshop space, and 10 resident artist studios all within our heritage building, TAP provides a unique space where people can tap into creativity.
